520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. Codes JEL : D24, L25, L60, O14. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | We explore to what extent the export status, technology and productivity of Egyptian industrial firms are related. For five industries (chemistry, food and processing, garments, metal, textiles), two technology classes are statistically identified from the estimation of latent class production function models (LCM). Technology proves to be the key determinant in productivity gaps across firms. The most productive technology is adopted by a greater proportion of exporting than non-exporting firms. Controlling for the technology, exporters have also higher technical efficiency levels. In metal and textile industries, young exporters outperform the older ones and the export status seems predetermined by a long presence in the domestic market. |
