| Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ Notre objectif est de mettre en avant la diversité des réalités urbaines du KwaZulu-Natal. Une typologie originale est construite à partir d’une ACP, basée sur des variables sociales, économiques, qualitatives et quantitatives. Les résultats sont ensuite mis en relation avec un second classement urbain, plus conjoncturel et prospectif, basé sur le dynamisme économique actuel des villes, et leur place dans le jeu politico-administratif lié au nouveau découpage municipal de l’an 2000. Le croisement des deux classifications permet d’individualiser un panel de villes qui va des « grandes gagnantes » aux « grandes perdantes », en passant par des « perdantes promues » et des « gagnantes déclassées ». L’article montre enfin qu’au « T » provincial connu (axes spatiaux dynamiques) se substitue actuellement un « L gagnant » très actif, autour de Pietermaritzburg, Durban et Richards Bay. |

| Summary, etc. | ABSTRACT Our aim is to highlight the diversity of urban reality in KwaZulu-Natal. A typology is made from a PCA based on various criteria – social, economic, qualitative, quantitative, etc. This typology is then compared with a forward-looking urban classification based on current economic trends in the towns and their position in the new political situation inherited from the 2000 municipal boundaries. The combination of the two classifications creates various categories of towns, from “winners” to “losers”. The paper shows how the familiar provincial “T” (dynamic spatial axis) is being superseded by a “winning L” between Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Richards Bay. |
