| Summary, etc. | Lorsqu’en mai 1955, Wolfgang Hartke et Jean Dresch dialoguent publiquement à la Sorbonne de géographie appliquée, ce sont deux hommes mûrs, arrivés depuis peu au faîte de leurs carrières académiques. Hartke est alors déjà connu comme l’un des fondateurs de la nouvelle « géographie sociale », tandis que Dresch est renommé comme spécialiste de géographie physique et de l’Afrique du Nord, en particulier du Maroc. Leurs parcours sont à bien des égards comparables, et ce sont bien deux « patrons » de la géographie européenne qui se rencontrent dix ans après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et reviennent sur la question de la géographie politique. Pourtant, ce n’était pas du tout leur spécialité, et il s’agit d’essayer de comprendre ici les raisons qui ont présidé à cette discussion. |

| Summary, etc. | In May 1955, Wolfgang Hartke and Jean Dresch held a public debate on applied geography at the Sorbonne. They were both experienced men who had just reached the summit of their respective scholarly fields. Hartke had already made a name for himself as one of the founders of the new German “social geography” ; whereas Dresch was a renowned specialist of physical geography and North Africa, particularly Morocco. In many ways, they shared similar career trajectories. Both leaders of European Geography, they met ten years after the end of the Second World War to discuss geopolitics, which was far beyond the realm of their research focus.
