| Summary, etc. | Après y avoir enseigné régulièrement et y avoir tissé des relations scientifiques durables, John Brinckerhoff Jackson fut invité à s’exprimer, en 1986, lors de la cérémonie de remise des diplômes du département de géographie de l’université de Californie, Berkeley. Ayant rédigé par avance son discours, il prévoyait notamment de présenter sa conception de la géographie, en tant qu’il la pratiquait personnellement et en tant qu’il la concevait comme champ de recherche spécifique. Il promut, en ce sens, une géographie relationnelle et empirique, fondée sur la curiosité de l’amateur et sur l’étude des manières d’habiter les plus ordinaires. |

| Summary, etc. | After regularly teaching at the UC Berkeley Department of Geography and building durable scientific relationships with it, John Brinckerhoff Jackson was invited to give the commencement speech in 1986. He had written his speech out beforehand, planning to describe his conception of geography, as he personally practiced it and defined it as a specific research field. In so doing, he defended a relational and empiric geography, based on the curiosity of the amateur and on the study of the most ordinary ways of dwelling. |
