| Summary, etc. | Cet article présente le cas de la province du Zhejiang située au sud de Shanghai, dont le taux d’urbanisation a augmenté de 14 à 62 % entre 1978 et 2010, soit douze points au-dessus de la moyenne nationale. Le développement des petites villes se révèle y être le paramètre moteur de l’évolution de l’armature urbaine : alors que la province ne compte que 13 petites villes en 1990, elles sont au nombre 52 en 2010. Nous analyserons leur évolution ainsi que les relations entre ces centres urbains et leurs périphéries rurales qui se trouvent profondément modifiées, corollaire d’une redistribution des activités et des populations au sein d’un espace fonctionnel mixte. |

| Summary, etc. | This article focuses on the evolution of the urban framework since the early 1980s in the province of Zhejiang in China. Zhejiang province, whose urbanization rate increased from 14 to 62% between 1980 and 2010 – compared to the national average of 50% – is located south of Shanghai. The development of small cities is proving to be the driving force behind the province’s urban framework. In 1990, the province had only 13 small cities. There were 45 in 2000 and 52 in 2010. Focusing on these urban entities, our research analyses their evolution in the urban system and their relations with their rural peripheries that have been substantially modified, leading to a redistribution of activities and populations in a mixed functional space. |
