| Summary, etc. | En 1935, le géographe Pierre Monbeig arrive au Brésil dans le cadre d’une mission universitaire. Il est alors engagé dans une thèse consacrée aux îles Baléares mais sa découverte du terrain brésilien et des enjeux spécifiques d’un pays neuf vont bousculer sa conception de la géographie. Le but de cet article est d’analyser et d’interpréter la transformation de la pensée et des pratiques professionnelles de Monbeig. Au contact de ce grand pays, en évolution rapide et dont une grande partie du territoire n’est pas encore mis en valeur, sa formation française va entrer en tension avec des conceptions territoriales dynamiques, ouvertes et orientées vers l’aménagement. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1935, the geographer Pierre Monbeig arrived in Brazil for study purposes. He was indeed undertaking a doctoral thesis on the Balearic Islands, but his discovery of Brazil and the specific issues of this new country were to challenge his conception of geography. This paper aims at analysing and interpreting the transformation of Monbeig’s reasoning and professional practices. In this vast and rapidly evolving country in which a large part of the territory remained undeveloped, Monbeig’s French education was to be stimulated by dynamic, open and land planning-oriented territorial conceptions. |
