| Summary, etc. | Protestants d’origine anglaise, les Waddington ont été, au XIXe siècle et jusqu’aux années cinquante, à la tête d’une grande entreprise cotonnière, fondée en 1792, par leur ancêtre Henry Sykes. Naturalisés français au début du XIXe siècle, les Waddington ont, durant plusieurs générations, fait fructifier leur entreprise constituée de quatre usines édifiées le long de la vallée de l’Avre. Profondément attachés au protestantisme, ils se sont lancés très tôt dans le développement d’institutions sociales novatrices, qui s’inscrivent néanmoins dans l’idéologie paternaliste de l’époque. Richard Waddington et son frère aîné William Henry, députés puis sénateurs, ont joué un rôle important au sein de la gauche républicaine sous la IIIe République. William Henry, plusieurs fois ministre, est devenu Président du Conseil en 1879. Au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, malgré de nouveaux investissements, l’entreprise vit sur sa lancée. La crise des années trente lui sera fatale. Dès 1934 commence le lent démantèlement des Etablissements Waddington qui disparaissent définitivement à la fin des années cinquante. |

| Summary, etc. | A dynasty of cotton industrialists : the Waddingtons (1792-1957)The Waddingtons, Protestants of English origin, were, in the 19th century and up to the 1950’s, the heads of an important cotton undertaking, which had been founded in 1792 by their ancestor, Henry Sykes. They became French citizens at the beginning of the 19th century. Several generations of Waddingtons successfully managed the enterprise, made up of four mills, built along the river Avre. They were deeply religious protestants and therefore started very eariy to develop innovatory social institutions, which were, nevertheless, part of the paternalistic ideology of their time.Richard Waddington and his elder brother William Henry became deputies, then senators. They were influential members of the left of center Republican party, during the Third Republic. William Henry became a minister several times and in 1879 Prime Minister.After the First World War, despite new investments, the firm lost its impetus. The Depression of the 1930’s dealt it a fatal blow. From 1934 onwards, the gradual dismantling of the Waddington firm started and eventually it disappeared entirely at the end of the 1950’s. |
