| Summary, etc. | This paper provides a brief review of the key developments in British industrial finance during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and outlines some of the principal debates attracting the attention of economic historians in this field, including those on the role of the banking sector and the debate about late Victorian capital market failure. Section II surveys the burgeoning literature in banking history and highlights the growing consensus that British banks did not impede industrial performance unduly. Section II provides new estimates on corporate financial structure in some of the key industrial sectors of the late nineteenth century British economy, noting the diversity of business experience, and emphasing the need for continued attention on microeconomic studies to draw out the intricacies of historical relationship between finance and industry in Britain and their implications. |
