| Summary, etc. | Pour le mariage de Matthias Bernegger, professeur au Gymnase et futur historien, Caspar Brülow a composé un chronogramme et un épithalame fait de 90 distiques élégiaques. Il s’appuie pour ce faire sur une élégie écrite par Georg Sabinus à l’occasion de ses fiançailles. Chez Sabinus comme chez Brülow, Vénus confie à Sabinus / Bernegger son fils Cupidon, qui devient leur élève. Ce dernier, afin de se venger de ses maîtres, les blesse de la flèche du sentiment amoureux qu’ils portent à leurs futures épouses. Brülow adapte cette élégie aux circonstances strasbourgeoises : il fait l’éloge de l’Académie et de ses maîtres, lui confère plus de grandeur en exhaussant le niveau des interventions des personnages et rivalise dans certains vers avec le style et la métrique de son modèle. Cet épithalame, le plus long des poèmes de circonstance que nous connaissions de Brülow constitue le témoignage le plus précoce de sa connaissance de Sabinus ainsi que de son étroite relation avec Bernegger. |

| Summary, etc. | Caspar Brülow wrote a chronogram and an epithalamion for the wedding of Matthias Bernegger, teacher and future professor at the Strasbourg Academia. The epithalamion contains 90 disticha and is based on an elegy by Georg Sabinus about Sabinus’s own engagement. The story-line of both poems, Brülow’s as well as Sabinus’s, depicts how the roman goddess Venus hands over her son Cupido as a pupil to Bernegger or Sabinus, respectively. Cupido, as an act of revenge for his teachers’ severity shoots them with his arrow and makes them fall in love with their future wives. Brülow adapts Sabinus’s elegy to the Strasbourgian circumstances, praising the Academia and its teachers, and expands it by increasing the dialogues of all characters. In addition, he modifies style and metrics. Today, the epithalamion is known to be Brülow’s first Casualcarmen and represents the earliest document of his knowledge about Sabinus and his closer relationship to Bernegger. |
