| Summary, etc. | The North has been imagined and represented for centuries by artists and writers of the Western world, which has led, over time and the accumulation of successive layers of discourses, to the creation of “images of the North” – ranging from the “North” of Scandinavia, Greenland, Russia, to the “Far North” or the poles. Westerners have reached the North Pole only a century go, which makes the “North” the product of a double perspective: an outside one – made especially of Western images – and an inside one – that of Northern cultures (Inuit, Same, Cree, etc.). The first are often simplified and the second, ignored. If we wish to understand what the “North” is in an overall perspective, we must ask ourselves two questions: how do images define the North, and which ethical principles should govern how we consider Northern cultures in order to have a complete view (including, in particular, those that have been undervalued by the South)? In this article, the author tries to address these two questions, first by defining what are the images of the North and then by proposing an inclusive program to “recomplexify” the cultural Arctic. |

| Summary, etc. | Västerländska målare och författare har i århundraden haft Norden som konstnärligt tema och över tiden har det genom de konstnärliga representationerna skapats och lagrats en diskurs, ett « föreställt Norden », som projicerats likaväl på norra Skandinavien, på Grönland, Ryssland och det höga Norden som på polartrakterna. Det är förvisso bara ett drygt sekel sedan västerländska upptäcktsresanden nådde Nordpolen, men därefter kom också « Norden » att konstrueras ur två perspektiv, med en dubbel blick: en utifrån – de främst västerländska representationernas – och en inifrån – de ursprungliga nordiska kulturernas (inuiter, samer, creer etc.) De förstnämnda föreställningarna var ofta stereotypa, de andra okända och om man vill studera « Norden » i detta dubbla perspektiv, måste man ställa två frågor: hur kan man definiera och förstå « Norden » via representationerna, föreställningarna? Och på vilka etiska grunder bör en analys som siktar mot en helhetssyn vila, och hur och framför allt kan de perspektiv som negligerats och undervärderats inkluderas i analysen ? I artikeln besvaras dessa båda frågor först genom att en definition av det föreställda Norden, därefter genom ett förslag på hur de båda perspektiven – det utifrån och det inifrån – kan integreras och därigenom bidra till att « rekomplexifiera » det kulturella Arktis. |
