| Summary, etc. | In a short article published in 1925 Thomas Mann addresses his “unsimple” relation to psychoanalysis, suggesting that in his latest published novel, The Magic Mountain, the character of Dr. Krokowski could be read as “indemnification” [“ Schadloshaltung”] for “deeper concessions” [“ tiefere Zugeständnisse”] which the author made to psychoanalysis “inside his work.” He thus invites us to analyse this character not only as such (i.e. in the straightforward process of characterisation), but in terms of a strategy within the “artistic economy” of the novel. Krokowski’s repeated mythical identification as the infernal judge Minos makes him simultaneously a master of the labyrinthine space structure of the Berghof sanatorium, of its cyclic time, and of the theories that reign there. He notably plays a key role in contrasting successions of scenes in which refusal or denial of psychoanalysis alternates with Freudian dream sequences which present themselves as narrative confirmations of the actual validity of psychoanalytical theories. In this game of giving voice to both validation of and attacks upon psychoanalysis (“deeper concessions” and “indemnification”) – culminating in the diptych of sections Hippe and Analyse – Krokowski is a central piece and personifies both the possibility and the limit of a psychoanalytical reading of the novel, thus opening a space of playful relationship to the text. |

| Summary, etc. | In einem kurzen Aufsatz (1925) über sein „uneinfach[es]“ Verhältnis zur Psychoanalyse legt Thomas Mann nahe, dass in seinem jüngsten Werk, dem Zauberberg, die Figur des Krokowski eine „Schadloshaltung für tiefere Zugeständnisse“ sein könnte, die er „im Inneren seiner Werke der Psychoanalyse“ gemacht hätte. Somit wäre diese Figur nicht nur als solche, das heißt aus dem Blickwinkel der Charakterisierung, zu untersuchen, sondern als Strategie innerhalb der „künstlerischen Ökonomie“ des Romans. Dass Krokowski mehrmals mit dem Höllenrichter Minos metaphorisch identifiziert wird, lässt ihn als Meister sowohl der labyrinthischen Raumstruktur und der zyklischen Zeit des Sanatoriums, als auch der dort geltenden Normen und Theorien erscheinen: Er spielt namentlich eine Schlüsselrolle im kontrastreichen Aufeinanderfolgen von Szenen, in denen abwechselnd Verwerfung bzw. Verleugnung der Psychoanalyse, oder – besonders in Traumszenen – eben die eigentliche Gültigkeit ihres Erklärungsmodells inszeniert wird. Bei diesem Spiel, in dem im Text sowohl Bestätigung der Freudschen Theorien („tiefere Zugeständnisse“) als auch kritische oder satirische Attacken auf sie („Schadloshaltung“) zu Wort kommen, und das im Diptychon der Abschnitte Hippe und Analyse besonders offensichtlich wird, steht Krokowski im Mittelpunkt und stellt zugleich die Möglichkeit und die Grenzen einer psychoanalytischen Lektüre des Romans dar. Durch den strategischen Umgang mit dieser Figur wird einerseits die Anlehnung an psychoanalytisches Wissen teilweise unkenntlich gemacht, andererseits ein Spielraum der Interpretation des Textes eröffnet. |
