| Summary, etc. | Sebastian Brant’s Basel years have been well explored. However, it is widely unknown that as a lawyer, Brant was summoned for expert legal advice in a noteworthy trial held in Basel from September 1498 to March 1500. The discovery of an unpublished source reveals his involvement. His legal commitment sheds light in particular on his religious reformism and on his state of mind at the end of his stay in Basel, in line with his sharp satire of clerics pictured in the Narrenschiff four years earlier. |

| Summary, etc. | Brants Leben in Basel ist gut erforscht. Dabei wird jedoch die Tatsache übersehen, dass der Verfasser des Narrenschiffs eine ausschlaggebende Rolle in einem Gerichtsverfahren (Basel September 1498 – März 1500) spielte. Wie aus einer neulich entdeckten Quelle hervorgeht, ging es dabei um konkrete Probleme der religiösen Orden. Über die trockenen Angaben der Archivbestände hinaus erhellen Brants Stellungnamen zugunsten eines seiner Meinung nach notwendigen jedoch gemäßigten Reformismus. Die Kritik am Verhalten des Klerus erinnert weitestgehend an die vier Jahre früher im Narrenschiff zum Ausdruck gebrachten Positionen. |
