| Summary, etc. | La Nef des fous de Sebastian Brant porte la marque d’une opposition systématique entre le monde actuel et un monde passé, généralement idéalisé. Brant évoque une décadence universelle, qu’il voit à l’œuvre dans le domaine moral, politique, religieux et social. Il considère comme une forme de folie le goût de la nouveauté qui s’est emparé de ses contemporains et les pousse à rompre avec la tradition. Les nouvelles modes vestimentaires font l’objet d’une critique sévère, ainsi que les nouvelles pratiques économiques qui permettent le rapide enrichissement de certains au prix de l’appauvrissement de nombreux individus. Ces innovations mettent en cause l’ordre du monde et sont de nature à hâter la fin de celui-ci. De même, les innovations techniques et scientifiques suscitent la méfiance de Brant. Il est néanmoins difficile de déterminer l’attitude exacte de Brant, car de nombreux passages contredisent ses déclarations. D’autre part, la volonté didactique et l’engagement politique en faveur de Maximilien Ier s’accordent mal avec l’affirmation fataliste d’un déclin irréversible. |

| Summary, etc. | Sebastian Brant’s Ship of Fools bears the mark of systematic opposition between the current world and a generally idealised past. Brant calls to mind a universal decadence, whose effects can be ascertained in the realms of morals, politics, religion and society. He regards the taste for innovation which seized upon his contemporaries and induces them to break with the tradition as a form of foolishness. He castigates the new fashions just as the new economical practises which provide quick enrichment for few at the expense of impoverishment of many. These innovations jeopardize the world order and might hasten the end of the world. Likewise the technical and scientific innovations arise Brant’s distrust. Nevertheless it is difficult to determine Brant’s exact attitude, for many passages contradict such declarations. Moreover the didactic willingness and the political commitment on behalf of Maximilian I. fit badly with fatalistic statements of irrevocable decline. |
