| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez, créée en 1858 pour le creusement et l’exploitation de la voie maritime, constitue jusqu’à sa nationalisation en 1956 la plus importante entreprise concessionnaire d’Égypte. Cette période correspond à l’émergence de l’État-nation égyptien et à la construction d’une économie nationale. L’activité de la Compagnie de Suez marque durablement la région de l’isthme de Suez. Cependant l’entreprise adopte un fonctionnement de type colonial et marginalise les intérêts de l’autorité concédante ; le gouvernement égyptien et les groupes nationalistes et syndicaux réagissent en réclamant une gestion nationale de la voie maritime. L’étude de Suez renvoie à l’action de l’État égyptien sur le capital étranger et plus largement aux contradictions de la concession européenne en Égypte. |

| Summary, etc. | The Suez Canal Company, created in 1858 to manage the maritime passageway, was the largest private firm in modern Egypt until its nationalisation in 1956. This period corresponds to the emergence of the Egyptian nation-state and the development of a national economy. For over a century, the activity of the Suez Company had a marked effect on the isthmus of Suez; the economic and social impact of this Company on the region was enormous. At the same time, however, the firm adopted a colonial attitude and marginalized the interests of the concessionary authority. The canal was to serve larger financial and strategic interests, not the local economy. It was in this context that the Egyptian government, as well as nationalist and unionist groups, demanded the shift of the canal to national management. The history of the Suez Canal Company reveals the relation between the Egyptian state and foreign business, as well as, more broadly, the contradictions of the European concession system in Egypt. |
