| Summary, etc. | Cet article souhaite établir les origines de la notion de « gestion » et montrer que dans la pensée politique romaine figuraient déjà les fondements de la forme moderne de cette catégorie : rationalité, responsabilité, bienveillance et efficacité. Partant d’une analyse des usages du verbe gerere et de ses dérivés dans les sources anciennes, cette étude nous permet de comprendre comment, entre le Ier siècle avant J.-C. et le IIIe siècle après J.-C., les penseurs et lettrés, les empereurs et dirigeants, mais aussi le peuple des gouvernés, définissaient la gestion et plus particulièrement la « bonne gestion » ; elle retrace les étapes théoriques, idéologiques et pratiques de la construction d’une catégorie politique et gouvernementale originale qui s’invente à l’époque romaine. |

| Summary, etc. | The purpose of this paper is to trace back the origins of the notion of “management” through its latin form : “gerere”. We found that its modern foundations were already present in Roman politics : rationality, responsibility, benevolence and effectiveness. Starting from the analysis of the usage of the verb “gerere” and of its derivatives in ancient sources, this study allows us to understand how – between the Ist century B.C. and the IIIrd century A.D. – thinkers and literates, emperors and directors as well as common people defined “management”, and in particular “good management”. This allows us to trace back the theoretical, ideological and practical stages of the invention of a new political and governmental category in Roman times. |
