Summary, etc. | RÉSUMÉ L’objectif de l’étude est d’examiner les différences dans le profil des perceptions de soi selon le sexe et l’âge des adolescent(e)s. L’estime de soi générale et les perceptions de compétence relatives à divers domaines du fonctionnement ont été mesurées à l’aide du Profil des perceptions de soi à l’adolescence de Harter. 840 filles et 587 garçons de première, troisième et cinquième secondaire ont participé à l’étude. Les résultats révèlent des différences sexuelles dans l’estime de soi générale des jeunes et dans trois domaines particuliers de perceptions de soi. L’hypothèse voulant que l’apparence physique soit le domaine de perception de soi le plus fortement relié à l’estime de soi générale des jeunes n’a été que partiellement confirmée. Même si les relations sont très élevées, elles ne le sont pas davantage que celles observées avec la compétence scolaire. Enfin, alors que lien entre l’estime de soi générale et le domaine de la compétence sociale semble s’accroître avec l’âge chez les garçons, aucune relation avec le domaine des relations sentimentales n’a été observée. |

Summary, etc. | SUMMARY The purpose of this study was to examine gender and age differences in self-perceptions during adolescence. Harter’s Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents was used to measure global self-esteem as well as other specific domains of self-evaluation. 840 females and 587 males of seventh, ninth and eleventh grade were recruited to participate in this study. Results indicate gender differences in global self-esteem as well as in three specific domains of self-perception of competence. The hypothesis suggesting that the domain of physical appearance would be the one most strongly linked to global self-esteem was only partially confirmed. Despite their strong relation, it did not surpass the strength of the link between global self-esteem and scholastic competence. Finally, although the relation between boys’ global self-esteem and social self-competence seems to strengthen with age, no link was obtained with the domain of romantic self-competence. |
