| Summary, etc. | RésuméDepuis leur formation en 1944 les ‘forces d’attaque spéciales’ (tokkôtai ou kamikaze) ont été au centre d’un conflit idéologique. D’abord vus comme fanatiques souhaitant par-dessus tout mourir pour l’empereur, ou comme héros personnifiant la supériorité de ‘l’âme japonaise’, après la guerre ils deviennent les purs produits d’une propagande totalitaire ou des jeunes intellectuels trop romantiques, ou encore, implicitement, des ‘âmes inquiètes’ qu’il faut déifier et vénérer dans un sanctuaire à fin de protéger la nation.Des ouvrages récents présentant journaux intimes et lettres d’adieu réouvrent les débats autour de leurs intentions et de leurs sentiments. |

At first they were said to be fanatics impelled to die for the emperor, or to personify the ‘Japanese soul’. After the war they were considered to be a product of totalitarian propaganda, or over – romantic young intellectuals or, covertly, restless spirits which it was necessary to deify and enshrine in order to protect the nation.Recent books review their diaries and last letters and reopen debates about their motivations and feelings. |
