520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. “Mutism” is a word that makes silence a symptom, a pathology. As a lasting impairment of speech in certain situations and in relation to certain people, it is attributed an origin, or a cause, that does not belong to the child, even if he is the agent. Because this silence is addressed, enigmatic and irritating, it is suspected of being voluntary, intentional. But one does not choose not to speak: he has lost his tongue, his tongue has been cut out, we say in French. What is the agency that has suddenly, and sometimes for a long time, taken away the use of this organ and that acts at his expense? Could the child be the subject, in the sense of submission to a master whom he does not know and with whom he collaborates? It is to this violence suffered that the witness of this partial muteness, which is without lesion but persistent, reacts. He would like to heal it, to give back to the child what he has lost, but at the risk of confronting a ghost to which the mute child is attached and which he seems unwilling to let go.
