| Summary, etc. | Jusque dans les années 1975-1980, la toilette mortuaire est pratiquée par la toiletteuse aidée de quelques femmes. Il s’agit d’un rite d’entrée orienté vers le défunt qui ouvrait à son accession à la vie éternelle. La valeur symbolique de la dernière toilette du corps est donc très forte. Progressivement, du fait de la médicalisation de la maladie puis de la mort, la toiletteuse est remplacée par le thanatopracteur, spécialiste des soins de conservation, qui n’intervient plus seulement autour du corps mais dans le corps. Il s’agit ici d’un professionnel rémunéré qui, à la suite d’une formation, est autorisé à exercer. Le sens de la toilette est alors inversé : il s’agit d’une dernière « re-présentation » voire d’un rite de sortie. |

On the Inversion of Gender and the Reworking of MeaningUntil the years between 1975 and 1980, the laying out of corpses was practised by women with the aid of female groomers. The last offices are a ritual through which the deceased gains access to eternal life and, for this reason, the symbolic value of the laying out of bodies is extremely high. Gradually, due to the increased medicalization of illness and death, groomers have been replaced by embalmers specialising in the preservation of corpses through procedures which no longer merely concern the body’s exterior envelope but also its interior. Embalmers are qualified, paid professionals who, after a period of training, receive authorization to exercise their profession. This has operated a reversal in what laying out means and has turned it into a final’re-presentation’, or even an exit rite. |
