J.-C., la pratique des pleureuses et autres crieuses -« professionnelles » ou non- lors des funérailles est la forme la plus archaïque des manifestations ritualisées du deuil. Curieusement, elle n’a guère retenu l’attention des chercheurs. L’article propose un état de la question pour la France méridionale où l’on a affaire à un usage qui s’est imposé très tôt pour ne disparaître que dans les années 1960. Apanage de la gent féminine, cette pratique funéraire s’est très tôt « professionnalisée » tout donnant lieu à un art oratoire populaire, ostentatoire et éphémère, dont il ne subsiste plus que de rares traces qu’on s’efforce de restituer et de comprendre. |

| Summary, etc. | Funeral Weepers and Wailers in Southern FranceThe presence of ‘professional’ or ‘non-professional’ weepers and wailers as an integral part of funeral rites has been identified in Ancient Egypt as early as 1330 BC, and is one of the most archaic forms of ritualised grief. Strangely, few researchers have devoted their attention to this practice. This article attempts to set the record straight by describing and studying its manifestations in Southern France, from its ancient origins up until the 1960s when the practice disappeared. As a uniquely female prerogative, weeping and wailing rapidly became a ‘profession’, engendering a popular oratory art as ostentatious as it was ephemeral, and of which only rare traces survive today. This article attempts to piece these remnants together in order to gain a better understanding of this practice. |
