| Summary, etc. | Au moment de la mort d’une personne aimée, chacun a besoin d’accomplir des rites pour les obsèques. Et cela que l’on soit croyant ou pas. Les établissements funéraires ne doivent pas appliquer une version étriquée de la laïcité qui nierait toute spiritualité. Au contraire, il leur faut faciliter les gestes religieux qui peuvent aider les croyants. Il leur faut également accompagner les non-croyants avec des cérémonies civiles pleines de sens. Mais pour cela, il faut des maîtres de cérémonie légitimes et professionnels et des lieux pour officier. |

| Summary, etc. | Secularism and Funeral RitesWhen the death of a loved one occurs, those affected feel a need to accomplish a number of rituals in preparation of the funeral. And this whatever their beliefs may be. Funeral parlours should not apply a narrow version of secularism denying all spirituality. Rather, they should facilitate those religious gestures which might help believers through grief. It is also their role to accompany non-believers with meaningful civil ceremonies. For this, professionally trained, legitimate undertakers are needed to officiate in secular locations specifically designed for the purpose. |
