| Summary, etc. | Le vieillissement est ce long parcours dans l’irréversible où les premières fois de l’adolescence sont remplacées par les dernières fois du temps qui passe. Le « plus jamais » ne cesse de scander le fil du jour. Impossible désormais de refouler la précarité grandissante d’une vie qui s’achemine vers sa fin. Le corps vieux est celui qui accueille de moindres possibilités de transformation, de renaissance. Parfois la dégradation physique fait du vieillissement une longue épreuve, scandée par le deuil des proches, des anciens amis, qui fait de la personne une survivante. La confrontation à la mort s’accentue et certaines personnes âgées glissent dans la disparition de soi. Pour beaucoup sans doute, la mort est moins la conséquence de la vieillesse que de l’épuisement du goût de vivre, la diminution du sens qui soutient l’existence. |

The “never again” never ceases to punctuate the day. It’s impossible to repress the growing precariousness of a life that is heading toward its end. An old body harbors fewer possibilities for transformation and rebirth. Sometimes physical deterioration makes ageing a lengthy ordeal, punctuated by the mourning of loved ones and old friends, making the person a survivor. The confrontation with death intensifies, and some older people slip into a state of self-denial. No doubt for many, death is less the consequence of old age than a dwindling will to live, the diminution of the meaning that sustains existence. |
