| Summary, etc. | Résumé Shakespeare in Love, film réalisé par John Madden en 1999 sur un texte écrit par Marc Norm et Tom Stoppard, enterre joyeusement les thèses structuralistes sur la mort de l’auteur, que non seulement il ressuscite, mais dont il fait paradoxalement le principal personnage de son œuvre. Cette brillante reconstitution de la vie des théâtres à Londres à la fin du xvie siècle avec ses mœurs financières sans pitié et ses rivalités féroces où l’argent, le sexe et la jalousie entrent principalement en ligne de compte est aussi la métaphore transparente de l’Hollywood d’aujourd’hui. C’est également une histoire d’amour et de mort, à mi-chemin du western et de la comédie américaine, parfaitement servie par un scénario à la fois désopilant et intelligent. Comment dès lors ne pas voir dans ce film divertissant et décapant l’esquisse de ce qu’on pourrait appeler une « didactique du plaisir » ? |

| Summary, etc. | Shakespeare in Love, the film directed by John Madden in 1999 on a joint contribution by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, works as an invitation to the funny funeral of the structural theories about the death of the author who is here not only resurrected but also the hero of his own fiction. This superb recreation of the life of the London playhouses at the end of the 16th century, with its ruthless business transactions and fierce rivalries where money, sex and jealousy are given pride of place, is a transparent metaphor of contemporary Hollywood. It is also a story of love and death, half way between a western and an American comedy, highlighted by a hilarious and clever script. Isn’t this simultaneously pleasant and thought-provoking film opening the way to what might be called an art of teaching by teasing? |
