| Summary, etc. | RésuméPourquoi Lacan a-t-il étudié aussi obstinément les différents types d’écriture ? Il partage de la sorte, bien que de façon implicite, la critique du phonocentrisme traditionnel que mène le philosophe Giambattista Vico dans la première moitié du xviiie siècle : non seulement les « paroles réelles » ne sont pas exclusivement verbales, mais les paroles dites « muettes » l’ont emporté au commencement du monde sur les paroles verbales et elles continuent à manifester leur efficacité.Après avoir fait des mathématiques « le sanctuaire de la vérité », Vico fut de plus en plus sensible aux difficultés de les prendre pour seul et unique modèle de la vérité. Si la force des mathématiques provient, certes, de leur autonomie opérative, ce qu’elles gagnent en autonomie et en autoréférentialité, elles le perdent en réalité : « Le point, si on le figure, n’est plus un point, et l’unité qu’on multiplie n’est plus une unité. » Il y a donc danger à supposer les mathématiques homogènes à la nature ; et le succès de la raison, à son plus haut développement, doit susciter la méfiance, car elle perd nécessairement de vue le monde dont elle s’abstrait.Vico avait posé en 1710 la convertibilité du verum et du factum ; mais le factum lui parut sans doute ensuite trop équivoque. Toujours est-il qu’il ne l’évoqua plus dans la Scienza nuova : unir le verum à autre chose que lui, tel est le problème, mais comment désigner cette autre chose ? Vico l’appela le certain, certum. Avérer suppose une opération première qui consiste à « certifier », à assurer par une série d’opérations très précises que Vico réunit sous le commun dénominateur de la « philologie ».C’est par le double biais du certum et du verum que l’écrit prend un rôle essentiel comme lettre à la fois volante et volée, poursuivant d’elle-même sa trajectoire et détournée (purloined). La lettre ne se caractérise finalement pas par la « mutité » : c’est une « parole réelle », qui ne relève pas seulement de la communication, mais du transfert. |

| Summary, etc. | Why did Lacan stubbornly persist in studying different types of writing ? In this way he shares, although implicitly, with the philosopher Giambattista Vico who, in the first half of the 18th century, criticized traditional phonocentrism : not only is “real speech” not exclusively verbal, but “silent” speech had the upper hand in the beginning of mankind and continues to show its impact.After making mathematics the “sanctuary of truth” Vico found it more and more difficult to consider them the one and only model of truth. Whereas obviously the force of mathematics stems from their operational autonomy, what is gained in autonomy and auto-reference is lost in reality : “The point, if represented, is no longer a point and the unit, when multiplied, is no longer a unit.” There is therefore a risk in postulating that mathematics are homogeneous with nature ; the primacy given to reason at its highest development raises suspicion because it is necessarily our of touch with the world from which it is abstracted.In 1710 Vico set down the convertibility of the verum and the factum ; but the factum then undoubtedly appeared to him to be too equivocal. In any case he no longer mentioned it in the Scienza nouva : combine the verum with something else, that is the question, but how to designate the something else ? Vico called it the certain, certum. To establish supposes an operation which consists in “certifying”, in ensuring, through a series of very precise operations which Vico joined together under the common denominator of “philology”.It is from the double angle of the certum and the verum that writing takes on an essential role as letter both purloining and purloined, both pursuing its trajectory and purloined. The characteristic of the letter in the end is not its “silence” : it is “real speech” which is not merely the concern of communication, but of transference. |
