| Summary, etc. | RésuméÀ partir d’une enquête ethnographique réalisée à Salsomaggiore (Italie du Nord) en septembre 2001, lors de l’élection de Miss Italia, les auteures comparent la figure de la Miss et les modalités de son élection, dans différents contextes temporels ( xixe, xxe) et géographiques (France, États-Unis). Les concours sont de bons exemples pour cerner les mécanismes d’évaluation de la beauté, ainsi que les critères qui la caractérisent, tant du fait des jurys populaires que de jurys d’experts. Ces concours, à l’organisation complexe et délicate, s’avèrent être un mélange savant de critères, allant du mesurable au non-mesurable, du corps à l’âme ; enfin, jonglant entre normes rigoureuses (objectives) et appréciations personnelles (subjectives). Ce contexte devient alors un observatoire privilégié. On y voit se formaliser une norme d’exception, qui évolue selon l’époque et la culture, se révélant significative aussi bien sur le plan local (concours régionaux, nationaux) que global (concours internationaux). |

| Summary, etc. | Starting from an ethnographic survey carried out in Salsomaggiore (North Italy) in september 2001 during the election of Miss Italia, the authorins compare the figure of the Miss and the modalities of her election in different times (19th and 20th centuries) and places (France, United States). Beauty contests enable to discern the mechanisms of evaluation and criteria of beauty prevailing in both civilian and experts’ juries. These contests whose organization is complex and subtle use a skilful mixture of criteria refering to the measurable and the non measurable, to the body and the soul, to rigorous (objective) norms and personal (subjective) appreciations. They thus enable a privileged observation of the formalization of a special norm that evolves with time and culture and is significant both locally (regional and national contests) and globally (international contests). |

Jahrhundert) und Ländern (Frankreich, den Vereinigten Staaten). Schönheitswettbewerbe ermöglichen, die für Volks- und Experten-Jurys entscheidenden Schätzungsmechanismen und Kriterien der Schönheit zu bestimmen. Diese Wettbewerbe mit komplexer Organisation stellen eine geschickte Mischung von Kriterien auf, die vom Messbaren bis zum Unmessbaren, vom Körper bis zur Seele, von strengen (objektiven) Normen bis zu persönlichen (subjektiven) Einschätzungen reichen.
