| Summary, etc. | RésuméÀ partir de la lecture anthropologique d’un court roman de Louise de Vilmorin, Madame de*** (1951), cet article propose d’examiner la notion d’objet précieux. Il tente de réfléchir plus largement à la construction de la valeur des objets matériels à travers les mutations de leur statut social. Madame de*** retrace l’histoire d’une aristocrate endettée prise au piège de ses mensonges pour avoir perdu une paire de boucles d’oreilles. Le parcours compliqué de ces bijoux perdus nous permet de saisir leurs perpétuelles fluctuations signifiantes. Plus encore, ce récit montre que la préciosité des choses ne leur est pas immanente, mais réside aussi dans les valeurs – dans l’échange et la production symbolique – que leur attribuent leurs usagers. |

| Summary, etc. | Starting from an anthropological reading of the short novel Madame de by Louise de Vilmorin (1951), the author examines the notion of precious object. He studies more largely the construction of the value of material precious objects through the changes of their social status. Madame de traces the history of an indebted female aristocrat caught in the trap of her lies about the loss of a pair of ear rings. The complicated course of these lost jewels enables to size up their perpetual variations of meaning. Furthermore, this story shows that the preciousness of things is not immanent to them, but lies also in the values – in the exchange and symbolic production – attributed to them by their users. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungAuf der Basis eines anthropologischen Lesens des kurzen Romans von Louise de Vilmorin, Madame de, untersucht der Autor den Begriff von Wertgegenstand. Er studiert im besonderen die Konstruktion des Wertes der materiellen Gegenstände durch die Änderung ihrer sozialen Status. Der Roman Madame de beschreibt die Geschichte einer verschuldeten Aristokratin, die in die Falle ihrer Lügen über den Verlust eines Paares Ohrringe gelockt wird. Die komplizierte Geschichte dieser verlorenen Schmucksachen ermöglicht, ihre stetigen Sinnesänderungen zu verstehen. Überdies zeigt diese Geschichte, dass die Kostbarkeit der Sachen ihnen nicht innewohnend ist, sondern in den Werten – dem Wechsel und der symbolischen Produktion – liegt, die ihre Benutzer ihnen zuerkennt. |
