| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’ouvrage de R. Frankenberg sur le village de Pentrediwaith (1957) constitue la première étude anthropologique « moderne » portant sur une communauté rurale de Grande-Bretagne. Appliquant les méthodes de la recherche ethnographique et du comparatisme à un terrain britannique, il suscita à l’époque un vif intérêt dans les médias nationaux. Il contribua ainsi de façon déterminante à créer une tradition d’« études de communautés » au sein de l’anthropologie sociale et de la sociologie britanniques. L’article montre comment le travail de pionnier de R. Frankenberg a été façonné par des influences provenant de sa vie personnelle et de ses activités universitaires et politiques. Il montre aussi comment il est parvenu à capter dans le discours ambiant certains courants contemporains. L’auteur tente enfin d’expliquer pourquoi cet ouvrage a marqué aussi fortement et durablement l’anthropologie de la Grande-Bretagne. |

| Summary, etc. | R. Frankenberg’s Village on the Border (1957) was the first « modern » anthropological study of a British rural community. By applying the techniques of ethnographic research and cultural comparison to a British milieu, it attracted great interest in the British media at the time, and was hugely influential in generating a tradition of « community study » within British social anthropology and sociology. In this article, the author shows the personal, academic and political influences which helped to shape Frankenberg’s pioneering work, and the ways in which it captured contemporary currents in British discourse. He concludes by suggesting why his study has had such a strong and enduring influence on the anthropology of Britain. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungR. Frankenbergs Village on the Border (1957) war die erste moderne anthropologische Studie einer britischen Landgemeinde, Penrediwaith. Bei der Anwendung von Techniken der ethnographischen Forschung und des kulturellen Vergleichs auf ein britisches Milieu rief diese Studie ein grosses Interesse in den britischen Medien der Zeit hervor und erzeugte eine Tradition von Gemeinschaftsstudien innerhalb der britischen sozialen Anthropologie und Soziologie. Der Autor zeigt wie Frankenbergs Pionierstudie von persönlichen, akademischen und politischen Einflüssen geprägt ist, und wie sie einige zeitgenössische Richtungen des britischen Diskurses begriffen hat. Zum Schluss versucht er zu erklären, warum dieses Werk die Anthropologie Grossbritaniens so stark und lange beeinflusst hat. |
