| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes études de communautés menées au cours des quarante-cinq dernières années sont réexaminées pour montrer combien l’importance des « communautés imaginées » a été insuffisamment reconnue. Cet article fait référence à une distinction établie par Clifford Geertz entre deux notions, celles d’« experience-near » (« proche de l’expérience ») et d’« experience-distant » (« éloigné de l’expérience ») pour affiner certaines hypothèses et approches de chercheurs en sociologie des communautés, parmi lesquels R. Frankenberg. Quelques explications possibles du déclin des études de communautés à la fin des années 1960 sont étudiées à la lumière du rôle, de plus en plus central à partir des années 1970 et 1980, de la notion de classe sociale dans l’analyse sociologique. Des recherches sur les communautés personnelles illustrent la possibilité d’une fusion créatrice entre approches « proches de l’expérience » et « éloignées de l’expérience ». Il en ressort qu’il n’y a aucune raison de privilégier le concept théorique de « communauté territorialisée », souvent fondé sur des hypothèses matérialistes, au détriment de la « communauté imaginée » véritable. |

| Summary, etc. | Studies of community undertaken over a period of some forty-five years by the author and his colleagues are re-considered to show how the significance of « communities-in-the-mind » has been inadequately appreciated. The distinction made by Clifford Geertz between « experience-near » and « experience-distant » is used to sharpen up certain assumptions and approaches of community sociologists, including Frankenberg. Some possible explanations for the decline in the perceived importance of community studies from the late 1960s are discussed in the context of the growing centrality of social class in sociological analysis in the 1970s and 1980s. Reference is made to recent research on personal communities by Liz Spencer and the author to illustrate how an ellision between « experience-near » and « experience-distant » approaches may be achieved. It is concluded that the imputed community-on-the-ground, often based on materialistic assumptions, should not be conceptually privileged over the real community-in-the-mind. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungDie in den letzten 45 Jahren durchgeführten Gemeinschaftstudien werden aufs neue betrachtet, um zu zeigen, dass die Bedeutung der « imaginierten Gemeinschaften » untergeschätzt wurde. Der Autor bezieht sich auf Clifford Geertz’s Unterscheidung zwischen den Begriffen von « erfahrungsnah » und « erfahrungfern », um gewisse Annahmen und Annäherungen von Soziologen der Gemeinschaften, Frankenberg miteinbegriffen, zu schärfen. Einige mögliche Erklärungen des seit dem Ende der 60er Jahre fallenden Interesse für Gemeinschaftstudien werden diskutiert in dem Kontext der zunehmenden Zentralität der sozialen Klasse in der soziologischen Analysis der 70er und 80er Jahre. Forschungen über die persönlichen Gemeinschaften illustrieren die Möglichkeit einer Verschmelzung der « erfahrungsnahen » und « erfahrungsweiten » Annäherungen. Daraus geht hervor, dass der theoretische Begriff von « territorialisierten Gemeinschaft », der oft auf materialistische Annahmen beruht, nicht gegenüber der echten « imaginierten Gemeinschaft » privilegiert werden soll. |
