| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes traducteurs anglais de la fin du xvie et du début du xviie siècle, tels John Florio ou George Chapman, justifient presque toujours leur travail dans un paratexte souvent abondant. La justification est d’autant plus nécessaire pour Chapman qu’il traduit en langue vernaculaire l’ Iliade et l’ Odyssée, textes archétypaux écrits dans une langue considérée comme savante, le grec, par un auteur archétypal, Homère. La justification participe d’un mouvement plus vaste d’émancipation de la langue et de la littérature anglaises par rapport aux langues et aux cultures savantes, et de la formation d’une véritable littérature nationale. |

| Summary, etc. | Early modern English translators such as John Florio or George Chapman nearly always justified their work in the paratext of their translations. The justification was all the more necessary for Chapman as his source material was Homer’s epics, archetypal texts written originally in Greek by an archetypal poet, translated by Chapman in a vernacular language. Chapman’s translation and its paratext can be seen as the perfect test-case for the creation of a national literature and the emancipation of the English language and literature from their Classical sources. |
