| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article examine le rôle de l’État providence en comparant deux communautés régionales suédoises dont les taux d’arrêts maladie sont très différents. L’une se caractérise par une forte idéologie égalitaire, une diversité culturelle quasi inexistante et un faible taux d’urbanisation. Le pourcentage d’arrêts de travail y est élevé et va de pair avec un fort sentiment de méfiance à l’égard de l’État providence. Dans l’autre, industrialisée et dépendante de l’économie mondiale, le travail est physiquement pénible, la structure sociale hiérarchisée et les immigrants nombreux. Mais cette région croit en sa capacité à faire face au futur, et une forte solidarité avec l’État providence s’accompagne d’un recours minimal à ses services. |

| Summary, etc. | The article discusses the role of the welfare state through focusing on regional variations in sick leave in Sweden. By working with comparative community studies we found that the community where illness and absence from work was high simultaneously stood out as a community with strong equality ideas, almost no cultural diversity and a low degree of urbanisation. The number of people on sick leave ran parallel with a strong suspicion of the welfare state. In the community shaped by industry we found physically strenuous jobs, a pronounced class structure, many immigrants and dependency on the global economy. But people had a strong belief in their own ability to greet the future. Here solidarity with the welfare state was also strong – at the same time as need of it was minimal. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungDieser Artikel untersucht anhand zweier Gemeinden, mit einer sehr unterschiedlichen Rate an Krankschreibungen, die Rolle des Wohlfahrtstaates. Die eine Gemeinde ist gekennzeichnet durch eine stark egalitäre Ideologie, eine quasi nicht existierende kulturelle Differenz und eine niedrige Urbanisierungsrate. Der Prozentsatz der Krankschreibungen ist hier sehr hoch und geht mit starken Mistrauen gegenüber dem Wohlfahrtsstaat einher. Die andere Gemeinde ist industrialisiert und von der Weltwirtschaft abhängig ; Arbeit ist hier körperlich anstrengend, die Sozialstruktur hierarchisch und die Immigranten zahlreich. Im Vergleich zur ersten Gemeinde ist diese Region jedoch überzeugt von ihrer Zukunftsfähigkeit und ihre starke Solidarität mit dem Wohlfahrtstaat geht einher mit einer geringen Inanspruchnahme seiner Leistungen. |
