| Summary, etc. | RésuméDans ses pamphlets des années 1640 et 1650, John Milton imagine, à partir du modèle politique de l’Israël antique, non pas tant un système constitutionnel mais « un républicanisme de l’esprit ». Cet Israël est fondamentalement anticlérical, méritocratique et hostile à la monarchie héréditaire par la forme, mais il évoque avant tout des valeurs qu’il faut défendre : piété et vertu hébraïques épurées d’idolâtrie politique sont une source d’inspiration pour un pouvoir cherchant à asseoir sa légitimité. La référence à Israël dépasse toutefois chez Milton le simple niveau de la polémique pour façonner une vision de la société dans laquelle le politique vient se fonder sur l’éthique. |

| Summary, etc. | In his 1640s and 1650s tracts, John Milton envisages not so much a constitutional system but a “republicanism of the spirit” founded on his interpretation of the political model of Biblical Israel. Though this reading is fundamentally anticlerical, meritocratic and hostile to hereditary monarchy as far as its form is concerned, its primary concern is the defence of paramount values: Hebraic piety and virtue, when devoid of political idolatry, work as a source of inspiration for those seeking to give legitimacy to their own power. The reference to Israel, however, goes beyond polemics for Milton. It fosters a vision of society within which ethics is the ultimate basis for politics. |
