| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes zones pavillonnaires sont décriées à divers titres : dislocation des villes, banalisation des paysages, rupture du lien social et montée de l’individualisme. L’article en propose une analyse critique à partir de la haie, élément essentiel de la structure pavillonnaire. L’étude s’appuie sur des enquêtes auprès de catégories sociales relativement aisées, dans des lotissements périurbains construits entre 1990 et 2000 à Marne-la-Vallée et à Rennes Métropole. Le processus de fabrication de la trame arborée s’avère extraordinairement contraint. Il est l’expression de politiques urbaines et de logiques commerciales, mais il traduit aussi le rapport à la nature des habitants. Un modèle s’impose aujourd’hui massivement, celui de la haie haute et occlusive, qui protège des regards d’autrui. |

| Summary, etc. | Private housing developments are disparaged on several accounts : town dispersal, landscape trivialization, break off of social links and the rise in individualism. Through the case of the hedge, an essential element of these type of housing development, the paper offers a critical approach of the situation. Interviews were carried among middle classes living in private housing developments built in the 1990th at Marne-la-Vallée and Rennes Métropole (France). The building process of hedgerows appears to be extraordinarily constrained, as a result of urban public policies and commercial practices and reveals new relationships to nature. The high and occlusive hedge protecting from neighbours is highly dominant. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungKleinbürgerliche Wohngebiete sind in mehrerer Hinsicht verschrien : aufgrund ihrer Ausgliederung aus der Stadt, aufgrund der Banalisierung der Landschaft, wegen des Bruchs in den sozialen Beziehungen und wegen des aufsteigenden Individualismus. Dieser Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Hecke als essentiellem Element in der Struktur kleinbürgerlicher Wohnviertel. Die ihm zugrunde liegende kritische Studie greift dabei auf Interviews zurück die zwischen 1990 und 2000 in Marne-la-Vallée und in einem Wohnviertel von Rennes, unter Berücksichtigung verschiedener sozialer Schichten, durchgeführt wurden. In den Interviews zeigt sich, dass die Errichtung der Hecke als sichtbares Gerüst sich als äußerst umstritten erweist. Dass sie sowohl Ausdruck städtischer Politik und kommerzieller Logik ist, wie Ausdruck der Beziehung der Einwohner zur Natur. Ein Heckenmodell ist heute vorherrschend, das der hohen verschlossenen Hecke, die vor den Blicken von außen schützt. |
