| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article analyse l’application en Irlande du reps, le Rural Environment Protection Scheme. Il s’intéresse à des approches concurrentes du savoir, ainsi qu’à la prédominance de la science, manifeste dans le débat sur la politique agro-environnementale. La science est en effet utilisée comme une stratégie d’officialisation qui permet de justifier l’intervention de l’État dans l’agriculture. Toute objection provenant des agriculteurs est ainsi jugée dépassée et par conséquent illégitime. Les politiques culturelles se décidant en fonction des représentations de l’environnement, les fermiers et les conseillers agricoles se livrent une lutte symbolique ou idéologique. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper analyses the Rural Environment Protection Scheme ( reps) in Ireland. It addresses competing approaches to knowledge and the dominance of science in debates on agri-environmental policy. Science is used effectively as an officialising strategy, to justify this form of state intervention in farming. Any objections that farmers might raise are deemed old-fashioned and therefore illegitimate. They are engaging in symbolic or ideological struggles and cultural politics are being forged on the anvil of representations of the environment. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungDieser Artikel analysiert die Anwendung des sogenannten reps – des Rural Environment Protection Scheme – in Irland. Dabei richtet sich der Fokus besonders auf den unterschiedlichen Umgang mit Wissen sowie auf die Vorherrschaft der Wissenschaft, die besonders in der politischen Debatte um die Landwirtschafts- und Umweltpolitik sichtbar wird. Denn die Wissenschaft wird in erster Linie als Rechtfertigung für die offizielle politische Linie benutzt, d.h. dazu das Eingreifen des Staates in die Landwirtschaft zu rechtfertigen. Die Sichtweise der Landwirte erscheint im gleichen Atemzug als überholt und somit als illegitim. Entsprechen liefern sich die Landwirte und die wissenschaftlichen Berater einen symbolischen sowie ideologischen Kampf um die Einflussnahmen auf die politischen Entscheidungen in Fragen der Landwirtschafts- und Umweltpolitik. |
