Socio-spatial analysis of religious traditionalism in a Parisian suburbThis paper considers an observation made by a number of residents of Algerian origin in a Parisian suburb that the area has become increasingly Muslim. This suggestion counters recent national quantitative data that propose a decrease in visible expressions of Muslimness in the French public sphere. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the suburb of Petit-Nanterre, this paper argues that transnationally-informed manifestations of tradition and the bled gain significance because of the spatial and the socio-economic conditions of the banlieue. |
