| Summary, etc. | RésuméPartant de la différence ontologique entre fable (« story ») et histoire (« plot ») mise à plat par le récit policier, on constate que l’évolution du genre dans sa version américaine tend à rapprocher les deux séquences. Le « détective social » perd la distance épistémologique qui fondait sa supériorité et se retrouve immergé dans la réalité historique du présent. En résulte un élargissement de la sphère de l’enquête : la méfiance vis-à-vis de l’histoire officielle est l’aboutissement du soupçon à l’égard de tout discours sur lequel se déploie le roman policier, de même que la manipulation supposée correspond à la recherche de l’auteur de l’action. Ainsi le roman d’énigme devenu roman policier évolue vers le roman du complot : il y a ubiquité du crime devenu manipulation historique. Il s’agira d’étudier le rapport entre roman policier et métafiction historique, et d’installer le roman de complot comme une transition entre le modernisme de l’un et le postmodernisme de l’autre. La révision apophanique de l’Histoire qu’accomplit le roman de complot se présenterait à la fois comme archéologie et comme production, et le soupçon du roman policier deviendrait en lui-même créatif. Cette hypothèse se fonde sur l’examen de quatre romans américains contemporains : The Crying of Lot 49 de Thomas Pynchon, Mumbo Jumbo d’Ishmael Reed, Libra de Don DeLillo et Pattern Recognition de William Gibson. |

| Summary, etc. | If detective fiction in general lays bares the ontological difference between story and plot, the American version of the genre tends to draw the two sequences closer. The “social detective,” now deprived of epistemological distance, inevitably loses his/her superiority as s/he gets entangled in the historical reality of the present. The scope of the investigation is widened, and distrust towards official history is the logical outcome of the pervasive suspicion against the discourse detective fiction is based on. The whodunit turned hard-boiled morphs into the novel of conspiracy, crime as manipulation of History becomes ubiquitous. Through the discussion of the relationship between detective fiction and historiographic metafiction, the novel of conspiracy will emerge as a transitional form between the modernism of the former and the postmodernism of the latter. The paranoid revision of History carried out by the novel of conspiracy would qualify at the same time as archaeology and as production. This hypothesis will be put to the test by the examination of four contemporary American novels: The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon, Mumbo Jumbo by Ishmael Reed, Libra by Don DeLillo and Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. |
