| Summary, etc. | Despite the propagandist discourse promoted by the colonial authorities, the history of acclimatizing merino sheep in Algeria was littered with failures, indicative of the often overweening ambitions of colonial engineering. Obsessed with the “sedentarisation” of their populations, the French authorities envisioned transforming what they nevertheless designated as the “land of sheep”. This article is a case study of the Bergerie Nationale de Moudjebeur, a model farm and shepherds’ school situated on the edge of the steppes, in the south of the department of Algiers. In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, attempts to improve breeds and modernize livestock practices proliferated. |

| Summary, etc. | Malgré le discours de propagande porté par les autorités coloniales, l’histoire de l’acclimatation des moutons mérinos en Algérie est jalonnée d’échecs, révélateurs des ambitions souvent démesurées de l’ingénierie coloniale. Obnubilées par des objectifs de « sédentarisation » des populations, les autorités françaises imaginent transformer ce qu’elles désignent pourtant comme le « pays du mouton ». L’article proposera une étude du cas de la Bergerie nationale de Moudjebeur, ferme modèle et école de bergers située à la limite des steppes, au sud du département d’Alger, où se multiplient dans les deux dernières décennies du xixe siècle des tentatives d’améliorations des races et de modernisation des pratiques d’élevage. |
