| Summary, etc. | Cet article revient sur un moment charnière de l’histoire de la laïcité, de la politisation du débat sur l’école et l’islam. L’affaire dite du voile de Creil, en 1989, suscite une véritable controverse dans le débat public et brouille les frontières politiques habituelles, déchirant en interne toutes les formations de l’échiquier politique. Sont analysés les conceptions des différentes familles politiques françaises relatives à la laïcité (à travers la question du port de signes religieux relevant des croyances des familles) et l’école (et de son rôle dans la société), leur rapport à l’islam (alors religion d’une minorité socialement défavorisée issue de l’immigration) et la question de l’intégration. L’étude s’appuie sur l’analyse critique et distanciée des archives des secteurs éducation des partis politiques (bien souvent inédites), les publications militantes et la presse généraliste. Elle met en définitive en lumière la matrice d’une partie des débats actuels. |

| Summary, etc. | This article looks at a pivotal moment in the history of secularism, of the politicization of the debate on schools and islam. The so-called Creil veil affair in 1989 sparked a real controversy in public debate and blurred the usual political boundaries, tearing apart internally all parties on the political spectrum. The conceptions of the various french political families are analysed : those relating to secularism (through the question of the wearing of religious symbols relating to the beliefs of families) and the school (and its role in society), their relationship to islam (then religion of a socially disadvantaged minority resulting from immigration) and the question of integration. The study draws on a critical and distanced analysis of archives from the education sectors of political parties (often unpublished), activist publications and the general press. It ultimately sheds light on the matrix of some of the current debate. |
