Summary, etc. Dans un contexte de réforme des services de probation de l’administration pénitentiaire, les cadres intermédiaires occupent une place stratégique, au point d’articulation entre la redéfinition des normes et leur mise en application. Face à l’indétermination de leur rôle, ces derniers se retrouvent toutefois tiraillés entre les attentes divergentes de leurs supérieurs et de leurs subordonnés. Cet article analyse leur comportement en situation en croisant les dispositions incorporées avec la position occupée au sein de l’administration. La configuration organisationnelle, tant nationale que locale, pèse sur l’adoption d’un style d’encadrement formaliste ou de proximité dans l’exercice du métier. Les trajectoires professionnelles révèlent de leur côté une césure générationnelle qui structure les représentations de la carrière. Une fois mises en relation, ces dimensions font émerger différents modes d’ajustement aux réformes, qui vont de l’apathie à la temporisation, et de la neutralité bienveillante à la traduction volontariste.

Summary, etc. Drivers or passengers?In the context of probation services reform, middle managers are in a strategic position, at the crossroads between the redefinition of standards and their implementation. Because of the uncertain nature of their role, however, they are torn between the divergent expectations of their superiors and their subordinates. This article analyses their behavior in context, by mixing internalized dispositions with position within the administration. On one hand, the configuration of the organization, both nationally and locally, influences the adoption of a management style that can be described as close or formal. On the other hand, the analysis of career paths reveals a generation gap, which can explain a difference of representations. Once combined, these two dimensions reveal four types of behavior towards reforms: apathy, delay, neutrality and translation.
