520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In this article, we analyse the changing role of the French State in handling soldiers who died serving their country (also known as “Morts pour la France”). More specifically, we closely examine the process through which governments have institutionalised their commitment to take care of the repatriation, burial and individualised celebration of soldiers since the 20th century. The case of soldiers who « Died for France » appears here to be organised along the same principles that guide public policies on all human remains, civilian as well as military ones. In this process, human remains have to be understood as directly taking part in the transformation of the State’s action. This is particularly true for the bodies of soldiers who bear witness to the violence of conflict and require the State to come to terms with it.
