| Summary, etc. | Au carrefour des communes de Roubaix, Tourcoing et Wattrelos, l’Union est un projet d’aménagement d’envergure visant à rendre « attractifs » des « quartiers à problèmes », pour les ménages à plus hauts revenus et les « entreprises innovantes ». Retracer l’histoire de ce projet de renouvellement urbain, permet de mettre en lumière comment une coalition d’experts est parvenue à faire de l’Union un enjeu de développement métropolitain. Le tri socioéconomique qui s’opère alors oscille entre la valorisation de figures abstraites des populations et des entreprises que l’on souhaite attirer et le rejet des habitants et d’activités économiques jugés inadaptés à la vocation d’excellence économique et environnementale du site. Au nom de la promotion de « l’attractivité », s’amorce ainsi la production d’une immense friche urbaine. |

| Summary, etc. | Lying at the intersection between the communes of Roubaix, Tourcoing and Wattrelos, the Union is a large scale development project that aims to make “problem areas” more attractive to high income households and “innovative businesses”. Retracing the history of this urban renewal project allows us to highlight how a coalition of experts has managed to turn the Union into an urban development issue. The socioeconomic selection in operation oscillates between the valorization of the abstract qualities of the populations and businesses that it is hoped will be attracted to the area and the rejection of inhabitants and economic activities that are deemed to be incompatible with the vision of economic and environmental excellence that has been envisaged for the site. Thus, in the name of promoting the “attractivity” of the site, an immense urban wasteland has been created. |
