| Summary, etc. | The starting point for this article is a pair of photograph albums, conserved by the family of an Indian engineer, which document the construction site of the Sukkur Barrage, situated in the present state of Pakistan, between 1927 and 1931. The approach adopted explores the ways in which this photographic archive, which at first sight appears to be very technical in character, can be used to objectify the point of view of a subaltern and can serve to reveal the imbrication of hierarchies (racial, class-based, etc.) within colonial society. |

| Summary, etc. | Le point de départ de cet article consiste en deux albums photographiques, conservés par la famille d’un ingénieur indien, qui documentent la mise en œuvre du chantier du grand barrage de Sukkur, situé dans l’État actuel du Pakistan, entre 1927 et 1931. La démarche adoptée explore les manières d’utiliser cette archive photographique pour objectiver, par-delà le caractère très technique que revêtent au premier abord les images, le point de vue d’un subalterne et pour servir de révélateur à l’imbrication des hiérarchies (raciales, de classe, etc.) internes à la société coloniale. |
