| Summary, etc. | RésuméLes approches marshalliennes et les travaux relevant de l’économie spatiale semblent se rejoindre pour montrer l’importance de deux éléments pour l’innovation : la spécialisation productive, d’une part, et l’agglomération spatiale, d’autre part. S’appuyant sur cette littérature, la plupart des pays développés et nombre d’institutions internationales (OCDE, Banque Mondiale, Union Européenne) prônent la mise en place de clusters technologiques (politiques des SPL et des pôles de compétitivité en France). Nous souhaitons mettre à l’épreuve ces deux grandes propositions en nous appuyant sur une analyse approfondie d’un bassin industriel de taille moyenne, Châtellerault. Nous montrons que ce territoire se développe autour d’une spécialisation cognitive forte, ce qui vient souligner la prégnance des compétences historiques pour le développement territorial. Nous observons ensuite, que Châtellerault innove au moins autant que les territoires de plus grande taille en s’appuyant majoritairement sur des relations non locales. La spécialisation sectorielle et l’agglomération apparaissent comme deux éléments qui ne sont pas toujours indispensables pour l’innovation et le développement territorial. |

| Summary, etc. | Territorial development of Châtellerault: cognitive specialization and diversity of spatial dimensionsBased on a Marshallian perspective, most of the spatial analysis underlines the importance of two elements for innovation: the sectoral specialization, on the one hand, and the spatial agglomeration, on the other. Technological clusters are thus highly recommended by several developed countries (SPL and “poles de compétitivité” in France for instance) and international institutions (OECD, World Bank, European Union). Thanks to a detailed survey of a quite small industrial basin, Châtellerault, we test here these two proposals. First, we show that the economic development of Châtellerault is mainly driven by local competences. This sheds light on the relevance of historical competences to understand territorial development. Then, it appears that firms innovate as much as others territories thanks to non local collaborations. Therefore, sectoral specialization and agglomeration seem to be not always necessary for innovation and territorial development. |
