Summary, etc. | L’article s’intéresse aux espaces périurbains sous l’angle du commerce, en croisant l’analyse des structures commerciales et celle des pratiques et des représentations des habitants. S’appuyant à la fois sur des données portant sur les établissements commerciaux et sur une enquête par entretiens menée sur les franges nord de la métropole parisienne (secteurs de Méru, Senlis et Écouen-Ézanville), l’article entend contribuer aux réflexions actuelles sur le rôle de la proximité dans la fabrique des territoires périurbains. Après avoir montré comment les habitants mobilisent l’offre commerciale dans leur environnement, l’article donne à voir le rôle du commerce dans les processus d’ancrage local et de valorisation des lieux. Il démontre ensuite comment la diversité des contextes locaux se combine aux caractéristiques individuelles pour expliquer la variété des rapports à la proximité : proximité physique ou réticulaire, proximité exclusive ou inscrite dans un espace de pratiques élargi. Déjà mises en évidence dans des espaces plus denses, ces pratiques témoignent de la relative banalisation des espaces périurbains. |

Summary, etc. | Retail and the making of peri-urban areas: commercial centres and spatial practices of inhabitants in the North of Paris MetropolisThis paper deals with retail within the ‘peri-urban’ areas around big cities. It combines an analysis of the retail structure and an analysis of the local consumers’ practices and images. Using retail account databases and a series of interviews with inhabitants in the North of the Parisian Metropolis (Senlis, Méru, and Écouen-Ézanville), the paper explores the concept of ‘proximity’ and aims to contribute to the debate about the construction of local territories on the fringes of big cities. It shows first how commercial centres are practiced, and then moves on to examine how retail contributes to the good image and the inhabitants’ deep attachment to their local environment. Finally, it highlights the various forms of proximity – spatial proximity vs network-based proximity, local dependency vs large life space – which differ according to individual characteristics and spatial contexts. As these spatial practices have already been identified within areas of higher density, the paper concludes that peri-urban areas are being increasingly normalized. |
