| Summary, etc. | Composée d’environ 90 % de Musulmans, la « force algérienne » appelée tantôt « force de l’ordre locale » ou « force locale » comprend également des recrues européennes dont des appelés. Sous la houlette de l’Exécutif provisoire, elle est censée représenter l’embryon de la future armée algérienne. Toutefois, dans le contexte de la fin de la guerre d’Algérie, elle peine à s’imposer et ses membres sont victimes d’une « crise d’identité. » Ils ne peuvent pas correctement accomplir leur mission principale : garantir l’ordre. Désertion des « Marsiens » qui rejoignent l’Armée de Libération Nationale, Européens qui ont l’impression « d’être livrés à l’ennemi » : la force locale est un échec. |

| Summary, etc. | The Algerian Force—alternately known as “local law enforcement” and “local force”—was composed of about 90 per cent Muslims and the rest European recruits, some of whom were conscripts. The force was under the leadership of the Provisional Executive and was supposed to represent the embryo of the future Algerian Army. However, at the end of the Algerian War the local force was struggling to gain recognition, and this led to an internal “identity crisis”. The members of this local force could no longer maintain proper order, which was their main mission. The so-called “Marsiens” joigned the National Liberation Army. The Europeans were under the impression that they were being “handed over to the enemy.” This series of events led to the failure of the local force. |
