Summary, etc. | À l’instar de certaines organisations privées, opérant dans des secteurs en mutations rapides, les organismes publics de recherche peuvent envisager de recourir à la croissance externe en vue de renouveler leur paradigme stratégique et construire de nouveaux avantages concurrentiels. Cette manœuvre reposant sur une logique de co-développement, est appréhendée dans la littérature en management de l’intégration post-fusion, à travers la politique de symbiose (Haspeslagh et Jemison, 1991). Si cette approche est souvent considérée comme un mode de développement optimal, elle reste particulièrement complexe en raison des exigences contradictoires qu’elle soulève. Cet article s’appuie sur une étude de cas longitudinale d’une fusion récente pour étudier les conditions d’émergence et de stabilisation d’un tel projet stratégique dans le secteur de la recherche publique. Le modèle de la traduction (Callon, 1986) est mobilisé pour décrypter les mécanismes relationnels visant à faire face aux dilemmes induits par la recherche de symbiose. L’étude montre dans quelle mesure un organisme public de recherche peut parvenir à valoriser les atouts distinctifs d’un partenaire, afin de se renouveler sur le plan scientifique et institutionnel. |

Summary, etc. | Following the example of certain private organizations, operating in rapidly changing sectors, public research organisations may consider resorting to external growth in order to renew their strategic paradigm and build new competitive advantages. This maneuver, based on a logic of co-development, is treated in the post-merger integration management literature through the policy of symbiosis (Haspleagh and Jemison, 1991). Although this approach is often considered as an optimal mode of development, it remains particularly complex due to the contradictory requirements it raises. This article uses a longitudinal case study of a recent merger to investigate the conditions of the emergence and stabilization of such a strategic project in the public research sector. The translation model (Callon, 1986) is mobilized to decipher the relational mechanisms used to cope with the dilemmas induced by the search for symbiosis. The study shows to what extent a public research organisation can succeed in exploiting the distinctive assets of a partner, in order to renew itself both scientifically and institutionally. |
