| Summary, etc. | L’article analyse les causes, les répercussions et les modalités des opérations militaires soviétiques en Afghanistan à partir de documents officiels soviétiques et de témoignages russes. La première partie (1972-1979) examine les limites de la politique soviétique de soutien aux communistes afghans dans les années 1970 et retrace les événements qui conduisent le Politburo à opter pour une intervention militaire qu’il a d’abord catégoriquement écartée. La deuxième partie (1980-1985) révèle que l’enlisement militaire de l’Armée rouge procède avant tout de l’aveuglement idéologique des dirigeants soviétiques qui n’ont ni anticipé les conséquences internationales du conflit, ni compris la nature de la rébellion afghane, ces erreurs stratégiques conduisant l’Armée rouge à recourir à des méthodes contre-insurrectionnelles brutales. La troisième partie (1985-1989) montre comment le retrait d’Afghanistan est envisagé par Gorbatchev, puis mis en œuvre par l’Armée rouge pendant la Perestroïka. |

The first part (1972-1979) examines the limits of the Soviet policy on supporting the Afghan communists in the 1970s and traces the events that lead the Politburo to opt for a military intervention. The second part (1980-1985) reveals that the military difficulties encountered by the Red Army results primarily from the ideological perception of the Soviet leadership who neither anticipated the international consequences of the conflict, nor understood the nature of the Afghan rebellion, for which these strategic mistakes prompt the Red Army to resort to brutal counterinsurgency methods. The third part (1985-1989) shows how the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan is visualized and carried out during Perestroika. |
