| Summary, etc. | Ce bilan historiographique repose sur une vaste enquête menée à travers les différents champs historiographiques susceptibles d’informer l’évolution des pratiques et représentations de la nudité. L’objectif est d’éclairer les rapports dialectiques que le corps dénudé entretient avec les normes et les relations de genre en France au cours du second xixe siècle. Au cœur de la fabrique des archétypes du féminin et du masculin, les représentations différenciées du dénudement constituent un maillon essentiel dans la perpétuation de la domination masculine tout au long de la période. Cependant, au tournant du siècle, le dénudement représente paradoxalement un instrument de libération individuelle pour une série de pionnières, artistes et sportives qui, en s’emparant de nouvelles représentations du corps, ont pu subvertir les normes de genre propres à la culture bourgeoise et conquérir ainsi une marge d’autonomie et de liberté sans précédent. |

| Summary, etc. | This historiographical essay draws on a survey of different fields of historical research which shed light on the evolution of practices and representations of naked/unclothed bodies. It sets out to explore the dialectical link between nakedness, gender identities and gender relationships in France during the second half of the nineteenth century. The variety of representations of nakedness, central to the construction of feminine and masculine archetypes, constitutes an essential element in the perpetuation of masculine domination. Paradoxically, by the turn of the twentieth century, nakedness was a tool making possible the individual liberation of female pioneers – such as actresses and swimmers – who embraced new representations of the human body, thus subverting the gender norms of bourgeois culture and achieving unprecedented access to autonomy and freedom. |
