| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | In Burkina Faso, several hundred people, the majority being women, have been accused of witchcraft and mistreated by other citizens. Survivors of violence are excluded from their communities of origin. In the face of the multiple forms of abuse, embedded in traditions and customs, numerous actors have decided to take a stand against this phenomenon. The Catholic Church, a pioneer in this social and political mobilization, instigated setting up shelters and continues its work through public denunciations expressed by members of the clergy. Over time, other civil society actors have joined the fight. The state has consequently been pushed to intervene and has introduced public policies in favor of the fight against violence associated with witchcraft. At the same time, several laws have been passed to promote the implementation of these policies. The gap between the normative mechanisms and the practices of administrative actors has led the state to resort to traditional chieftaincy. Tensions have arisen between the public stance taken by customary elites and their representatives in village communities who passively observe the exclusion of victims from the territory for which they are responsible. |
