| Summary, etc. | Les grands ensembles de logements construits dans les années 1960 pour faciliter l’accès à la propriété de jeunes ménages sont aujourd’hui touchés par le vieillissement de leurs habitants, dont certains n’ont jamais quitté leur logement. Alors que cette forme d’habitat n’a pas été spécialement pensée pour le vieillissement, nous interrogeons le rôle de support spatial, social, affectif, symbolique du grand ensemble, dans le vieillissement à domicile de ses résidents. L’étude s’appuie sur le vécu et la parole de personnes âgées de 65 ans à 98 ans dans cinq copropriétés à Toulouse et à Bruxelles. Les entretiens semi-directifs, accompagnés de relevés habités des logements, permettent de caractériser la relation des résidents âgés au grand ensemble et d’identifier les supports mobilisés par les personnes. Ainsi, l’identité de « village », la dimension collective au service de l’individuel et l’intériorité étendue, ainsi que les dispositifs qu’ils entraînent, semblent constituer un soutien naturel à l’autonomie et au sentiment de chez-soi. Notre observation montre, d’une part à partir du grand ensemble comment un habitat non pensé pour le vieillissement peut quand même le supporter, et d’autre part l’urgence pour les gestionnaires du parc privé, à prendre soin d’un habitat conçu pour tous les âges et aussi à soutenir au sein de cet habitat un accompagnement plus soucieux de chaque vieillesse. |

| Summary, etc. | The large housing estates built in the 1960s to facilitate access to property for young households are now faced with an aging resident population, with some residents having never lived elsewhere. Since this form of housing was not specifically designed for an aging population, this article examines the role of spatial, social, emotional, and symbolic support offered by large-scale housing developments as their residents age in place. The study is based on the experiences and opinions of people aged between sixty-five and ninety-eight in five condominiums in Toulouse and Brussels. Semi-structured interviews accompanied by surveys of the inhabited dwellings made it possible to characterize the relationship of the older residents to the large housing complex, and to identify the forms of support they use. Thus, the village identity, the collective dimension designed to benefit the individual, and the extended sense of interiority, along with the associated mechanisms, seem to naturally foster autonomy and the feeling of being at home. The results of the observation show how, on the one hand, when it comes to large housing estates, living spaces that are not designed for an aging population can still accommodate older residents. On the other hand, the results highlight the urgency for private housing managers to maintain housing designed for all ages, and to be more mindful of each resident’s age when offering support. |
