Summary, etc. | Jordan is a unique country in the Middle East, where it has a complex relationship with its Gulf neighbors. The latter grant it substantial aid because they need the Hashemite monarchy to remain stable and because they want to limit any contagion of social protest movements. Despite this solidarity of interests, Amman’s relations with Abu Dhabi and Riyadh had deteriorated sharply, before improving in view of the bellicose context in the Persian Gulf. Jordan could play a central role in the Gulf, either within the GCC or in a broader structure. It has many assets: the acumen of King Abdullah II, diplomatic dexterity, one of the most sophisticated armies in the Arab world, and the support of the West. |
